About this tool

UUIDs aren't the only way to generate a unique ID. Nano ID produces a shorter, URL-safe string from a larger, customizable alphabet — popular in URLs and slugs. ULID produces a 26-character, Crockford Base32 identifier that starts with an encoded timestamp, so ULIDs sort chronologically and a database index built on them stays naturally ordered — something a random UUID v4 can't do.

How to use it

  1. Choose Nano ID or ULID.
  2. For Nano ID, pick a length (21 is the npm package's default, chosen so collisions stay negligible at real-world scale).
  3. Pick how many to generate and press Generate.
  4. Copy them all or download as a text file.

Examples

A Nano ID (length 21)

V1StGXR8_Z5jdHi6B-myT

A ULID

01ARZ3NDEKTSV4RRFFQ69G5FAV

Common problems

I need IDs that sort in insertion order in my database.
Use ULID, not Nano ID or UUID v4 — its first 10 characters encode the generation timestamp, so lexicographic order matches creation order.
