About this tool

JMESPath is the query language AWS's own CLI uses to filter and reshape JSON output — the same expression works here, against any JSON, before it ends up baked into a script.

How to use it

  1. Paste a JSON document.
  2. Write a JMESPath expression, or click one of the examples to see the syntax.
  3. Run it and see the extracted result, formatted.

Examples

Filtering an array of objects

people[?city=='London'].name
A JSON array of just the "name" field for every person whose city is London.

Common problems

A filter expression returns nothing, even though matching items exist.
String literals in a filter need backticks or quotes depending on context — `` `London` `` and `'London'` both work as a literal, but a bare word is read as a field reference, not a value.
